Some people quietly change your life simply by being themselves. Ms. Ruthie is one of those people.
Her friendship has been one of my life’s greatest blessings. She has influenced me not only as an artist but also as the kind of person I hope to become.
I began this portrait with the dramatic bloom of a century plant. Its rare flowering became a symbol of Ms. Ruthie as she approached her ninety-fourth birthday—a reminder that beauty, wisdom, and growth continue throughout life.
The background was created using unexpected materials, including turmeric and hand sanitizer, allowing chance and texture to become part of the creative process. I then built her portrait with charcoal and PanPastel, finishing with touches of gesso that bring light to her face.
More than creating a likeness, I wanted to capture the sparkle in her eyes, her warmth, and the unmistakable sass that has always made her unforgettable.
This portrait is my thank-you to a friend whose life continues to bloom and inspire everyone fortunate enough to know her.
After completing this portrait, I chose to gift it to Ms. Ruthie’s daughter as a way of honoring an extraordinary woman whose friendship enriched my life. Some artworks are created to be sold. Others are created simply to say thank you.
