The inspiration for this painting came from one unforgettable moment. While photographing a prickly pear cactus with my infrared camera, I couldn’t stop looking at a heart-shaped cactus pad hidden behind a barbed wire fence. Before I could even react, one of my students, Rylie, grabbed my camera, carefully crossed the fence, and captured the image for me.

Her willingness to help wasn’t about taking a photograph—it was an act of trust, enthusiasm, and kindness. That single moment has stayed with me for years.

Using my signature infrared-inspired palette, I transformed her photograph into this painting. Today, the heart-shaped cactus reminds me not only of the beauty found in unexpected places but also of the deep respect, encouragement, and lasting relationships that can grow between a teacher and her students.
