Gucci in Pink began with a photograph of one of my ex-student’s beloved ponies. Before picking up my brush, I carefully studied pony anatomy, knowing that ponies have their own unique proportions and expressions. My goal was to create a portrait that reflected Gucci’s individuality rather than simply paint a horse.
One of the first things I noticed was the scar on Gucci’s face. Rather than hiding it, I chose to include it because it tells part of Gucci’s story. We all carry marks from life’s experiences, and those marks often become part of our strength and beauty.
Painted on a wood panel, the smooth surface allowed me to build layers of color while preserving fine details in Gucci’s expressive eye and flowing mane. As I painted, my familiar infrared-inspired palette naturally emerged, reflecting the brilliant Texas sun and transforming the surrounding landscape into vibrant pinks and soft violets. My hope is that viewers see not only the beauty of a pony, but the quiet resilience, dignity, and individuality that make every living creature unique.
