Embers of Assateague is a mixed media digital collage created from photographs I took of the wild horses of Assateague Island National Seashore. Layering multiple images together, I emphasized warm oranges and reds to echo the spirit and energy of fire while honoring the remarkable history of these resilient horses.

During a visit to Assateague Island National Seashore, I spent hours photographing the island’s famous wild horses. Learning about their history—their remarkable lineage, their adaptation to island life, and the unique landscape they call home—made the experience even more meaningful.

For Embers of Assateague, I layered several of my original photographs into a single digital collage, allowing the forms of multiple horses to emerge from one another. I intentionally intensified the oranges, reds, and warm earth tones until the composition seemed to glow like embers beneath the surface. The result is both portrait and memory, blending movement, strength, and survival into one image.

This piece was featured in the Fire Horse exhibition, where its fiery palette and layered imagery reflected both the power and quiet endurance of these extraordinary animals.
