I have always been fascinated by dramatic skies, so when storm clouds gathered over my hometown of Hawley, Texas, I grabbed my camera and headed outside hoping to capture an interesting cloud formation.
I had no idea I was photographing the tornado that would soon tear through homes and forever change lives in my community.
Looking back at the images afterward was surreal. What I thought was simply an extraordinary sky had become a record of a devastating moment.
When I painted this piece, I wanted to express two completely different emotions. The sky became a mass of thick paint, slashed across the canvas with energetic, almost uncontrollable movement to capture the violence and chaos of the storm. In contrast, the land below is painted in soft pinks, mauves, and gentle light. To me, it represents the calm, hope, and resilience that remain even when life feels overwhelmed.
This painting is not only about a tornado. It is about the fragile line between ordinary moments and life-changing events, and the strength that communities discover in the aftermath.
