Aspen Tapestry is a mixed media artwork created on vintage upholstery stretched over a wood frame. Inspired by my own New Mexico photographs, it celebrates the golden aspens and the layered memories of the Southwest.

This artwork began with a piece of vintage upholstery rather than a blank canvas. Instead of hiding the woven pattern, I allowed it to guide the composition. The existing texture and design influenced where I placed mountains, trees, and rocky hillsides, creating a conversation between the fabric’s history and the New Mexico landscape.

The imagery combines several of my own photographs from northern New Mexico, with special attention given to the brilliant golden aspens that transform the mountains each autumn. I wanted the landscape to feel both familiar and imagined—a place shaped by observation, memory, and artistic interpretation.

To complete the piece, I added coordinating fringe along the bottom. It echoes antique drapery while also suggesting a carpet of fallen aspen leaves, reinforcing the idea that materials themselves can become part of the story.
