Mary's Stairway to Heaven is part of Evynne Caffey's Faith Series, an ongoing body of work that combines infrared photography with historic religious iconography to explore the architecture of belief.
This artwork began during a visit to the Loretto Chapel in Sant Fe. Standing before the chapels' legendary staircase, I was struck by the graceful 360-degree curves and the symbolism they held. Built without nails, the staircase has long been regarded as a testament o craftsmanship, mystery, and faith. For me, it became a metaphor for life's journey-one that often requires trust, perseverance, and the courage to continue even when the path ahead cannot be fully seen.
The image of Mary was discovered in an unexpected place: on a bathroom door in Arroyo Secco. By blending these two photographs, I sought to express the idea that faith is often found where we least expect it. Sacred moments are not confined to churches or holy places; they can reveal themselves in ordinary spaces when we are willing to see them.
Created through the fusion of infrared photography and digital collage, Mary's Stairway to Heaven invites viewers to reflect on the unexpected ways grace, hope, and faith accompany us throughout life's journey.
